Eat Wings for Seat Belt Awareness Saturday

People can enjoy chicken wings and contribute to efforts to raise awareness of seat belt safety with a fundraiser starting Saturday.

The Monica Mapile Foundation is holding a fundraiser at all nine Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Las Vegas and Henderson. The restaurants will donate 15 percent of food purchases to the foundation when the order is accompanied by a foundation flyer.

The Monica Mapile Foundation works to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a seat belt. Mapile was just 18 years old when she was killed in a car accident. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The foundation is also working to create a primary seat belt law in the state of the Nevada, which would mean law enforcement could pull people over for not wearing a seat belt.

Any admission collected during the event in lieu of a donated suit also will be used to purchase new swimsuits.

Local Letter Carriers and Partners Collect More Than 202 Tons of Food

Local letter carriers in Southern Nevada, working with a number of dedicated partners, helped collect 404,028 pounds of non-perishable food during the 2012 National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

That is more than 202 tons of food, which was distributed to more than 20 local food pantries in Southern Nevada to help those who struggle with hunger.  Last year, this effort collected 372,789 pounds of food.

“We know we are making a difference,” said Glenn Norton, president of the Las Vegas branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers.  “As letter carriers, we see the need every day on our routes, which is why we look forward to this national food drive every year. But we couldn’t make the impact we do without the community’s support, or the support of our amazing partners. On behalf of all our member letter carriers, I offer a sincere thank you.”
