Metro Police honored the heroes of a shootout that left one officer seriously hurt.

The shooting happened in September at a Wal-Mart near Rainbow Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road. Police were called to the store because a couple was trying to use a stolen credit card to buy a large amount of items. While trying to take the pair into custody, police say the male suspect pulled out a gun and started firing. He hit one officer three times. That started a fierce firefight between police and the suspect. Eventually, the suspect was shot and killed.

During the ceremony Wednesday, Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie handed out five Medal of Valor awards and one Purple Heart to the officers that responded to the incident. In total, 47 commissioned officers and civilian employees were honored for their efforts that morning.
