The Liberty Patriots have done it again. They are the Sunrise Region's football champions again in 2012, completing the quest for the three-peat.

Liberty (11-1) defeated the Coronado Cougars (9-3) Saturday, 59-20, to claim the Sunrise Region title and have advanced to the state title game. This marks the first time the Patriots are in the state title game for football.

“I was extremely happy with the performance of the team against Coronado. It was our best-played game of the year,” Head Coach Rich Muraco said.

The Patriots will now take on local powerhouse Bishop Gorman (12-1) at 12:15 PM Saturday at UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium.

Gorman defeated Reed High School (Reno), 49-24, over the weekend to clinch their spot in the game. This will be the second time the teams meet in as many years.

Wranglers Go for Tougher New Look

Wranglers Go for Tougher New Look

Following the team’s best season in its decade of existence, the Las Vegas Wranglers are moving to a new look.

Team officials unveiled Thursday the team’s new logos in celebration of the upcoming 10th season of hockey in Las Vegas. The Wranglers’ website has also been revamped with the updated look, and redesigned uniforms will be unveiled in August.

The logo features a hockey-masked cowboy, keeping with the Wranglers’ tradition. The new crest design honors the city of Las Vegas with “LV” and “NV” lettering flanking the cowboy, and a red bling carries over from the design of the original Wranglers jerseys. A word version of the crest replaces the cowboy with two dice, each displaying five dots to signify the team’s 10th anniversary season in 2012-13.

A number of students from Bishop Gorman High School announced their college plans Wednesday.

Equestrian star Kayla Hillegas is getting a full-ride scholarship to Kansas State. She is ranked third in the country in the equestrian event known as reigning. It is where a rider is judged on the difficulty of the pattern they can guide their horse on.

"It is amazing. I am the first equestrian to sign at Gorman. So, I am very excited," Hillegas said.

Adam Wozniak is a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher, who has pitched his way to a scholarship at Portland University.

"All my hard work is finally paying off after all these years," Wozniak said. "Sometimes, people only focus on the more important people, and those people just get left in the shadows. It is good to have your own shining moment.”
