Mural Honoring Former Student Painted at Jydstrup Elementary

Mural Honoring Former Student Painted at Jydstrup Elementary

Officials from a local bank branch joined school representatives from Helen Jydstrup Elementary and a high school art student to honor a former student.

City National Bank’s senior leadership group worked Saturday with Jydstrup Principal David Frydman and Bishop Gorman High School student Zach Telles to paint a large mural in the front entrance of Jydstrup Elementary School, 5150 Duneville Street, in Las Vegas.

The mural was a joint idea of Frydman and Carolyn Rodriguez, program administrator for City National’s Reading is The way up® literacy program. Kameron Asgari, a fifth-grade student at Jydstrup, fatally shot himself last December. Frydman wanted everyone to see the mural when they return to school on August 27.

New Traffic Safety Program Launched at Las Vegas Middle School

New Traffic Safety Program Launched at Las Vegas Middle School

Student nurses and hospital professionals launched a new effort to protect kids at one middle school.

Safe Kids at Sunrise Children’s Hospital partnered with Roseman University nursing students to create the traffic safety plan at Tarkanian Middle School. The new program was launched Thursday morning.

The idea is to change the students and the parents’ unsafe behaviors. Many students cross the street outside a crosswalk. The solution to that problem came from a student who suggested putting up temporary pylons to create a crosswalk in the middle of the street.

“It takes a long time to get sidewalks put in and crosswalks and permits for a long term solution,” Jeanne Cosgrove, RN Director for Clark County Safe Kids, said.

At the same time that kids are crossing illegally, many drivers perform illegal and dangerous U-turns.

Throughout January, the students decorated patriotic cards to show gratitude and express their appreciation for everything troops do to protect American citizens. The cards will arrive just in time to give a few soldiers a special Valentine’s Day reminder of love and thanks.
