County Pools Join World's Largest Swim Lesson Attempt

Two Las Vegas pools will join others in southern Nevada in an international attempt to break a world record.

Desert Breeze and Hollywood pools are accepting registrations on a first-come, first-serve basis from people who want to be part of a Guinness World Record attempt at the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted. Tuesday, June 18.

Desert Breeze is located at 8275 Spring Mountain Road near Durango Drive, and the Hollywood Aquatic Center is located at 1550 S. Hollywood Blvd., south of East Charleston Boulevard.

The Southern Nevada Health District reported seven fatal drownings involving children in 2012. City of Henderson pools also are taking part in the event.

Registration opens Thursday for swimming lessons at Clark County's pools.

The swimming lessons are offered in two-week sessions throughout the summer. They are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis at all 14 of the county's pools and water parks, including facilities in Laughlin, Overton and Indian Springs.

Programs and schedules vary at each location. To see brochures for each location, go to clarkcountynv.gov.

Las Vegas Student Finalist in Google Doodle Contest

A student at Southwest Career and Technical Academy is closer to having her artwork seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world.  

Zhe Zhang is one of 50 finalists in the Doodle 4 Google contest. The online giant asked students kindergarten through 12 grade to redesign its logo based on the theme: My Best Day Ever. Zhang was selected out of 130,000 students from around the country.

People from around the world can vote for a winner by going to google.com/doodle4google.vote.html. The voting will take place now through May 10. There will be five finalists and one winner, which will be announced in an awards ceremony May 22.

The winner will have his or her artwork displayed on the Google homepage May 23, get a $30,000 college scholarship and earn a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.

Nevada Infant and Immunization Week will provide a number of opportunities to improve the health and well-being of your children starting Saturday.

The Southern Nevada Immunization and Health Coalition (SNIHC) and many health partners and providers will sponsor a week of immunization clinics during Nevada Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) April 20-27, beginning with a kickoff event hosted by the Southern Nevada Health District.

Nevada Infant Immunization Week is an annual observance that highlights the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases, and serves as a call to action for parents, caregivers and healthcare providers to ensure infants are fully immunized against 14 vaccine-preventable diseases before age 2.

Meadows Kids Holds Bake Sale for Animals

 

A group of local second-graders are working together to raise money for animal adoptions in the sweetest of ways.

From noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the students from the Meadows School will hold a fundraising bake sale for the Nevada SPCA. They will be joined by rescued dogs from the shelter.

Last year, the students raised more than $7,000, primarily through the sale of items costing under $1, Nevada SPCA officials said.

Meadows School is located at 8601 Scholar Lane.

The holiday season kicks off Friday night at Town Square.

Santa Claus arrives at 7 p.m. to lead a parade through the shopping center to his Santa house in the park. Once he arrives at the park, he’ll light the 45-foot Christmas tree and snow will start to fall. Following the snow, children will be able to get their pictures taken with Santa.

Santa will be available for pictures November 17 through December 24. The hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. He takes breaks between 1 and 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, he takes a break from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be Snow in The Square, which is a nightly snow show at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 and 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Each show lasts 10 minutes.
