Police arrest teen in street racing crash

 LAS VEGAS -- Police have made an arrest in a street racing crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old on Monday.

Francisco Alcaraz, 19, was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.

The crash occurred on Nov. 10 at 2:30 a.m. at Spanish Ridge Avenue and Durango Drive. Michael Aviles, 19, was killed.

I-15 reopens after nearly 6 hour closure due to fatal crash

LAS VEGAS - A deadly crash shut down all northbound lanes of I-15 between Spring Mountain Road and Sahara Avenue Wednesday morning for nearly six hours. Two lanes did reopen to traffic just before 10 a.m.

Nevada Highway Patrol says a Toyota pick-up struck and killed a pedestrian at approximately 4:30 a.m. The pedestrian, who was walking on the freeway, died at the scene of the crash. The male driver of the Toyota was not hurt and did stay at the scene to meet with NHP.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Spring Mountain Road as troopers investigated. 

 

Volunteers scour S. Nevada for missing woman

LAS VEGAS -- There are new clues in the search for a woman who disappeared last week and is feared dead.

No one has heard from 46-year-old Susana Villalvazo in about a week. She was reported missing along with her stepfather last Wednesday.

Her stepfather was found, and when he was pulled over by police, 75-year-old Samuel Teran shot and killed himself.

About 50 volunteers used their Veterans Day holiday to search areas on the outskirts of Las Vegas, along Blue Diamond Road near Hualapai Way and down dirt roads and flood channels in the area.

Another team searched along U.S. 95 near the turn off to Mt Charleston. The thinking by volunteers and her family is that possibly Villalvazo was killed and her body left behind.

The volunteers have searched 20-square miles within the valley on foot. Now, the area has expanded outside the valley.

Teen dead in early morning street racing crash

LAS VEGAS - The Clark County Coroner has identified the 19-year-old killed in a street racing crash near Durango Drive and Russell Road as Michael Anthony Aviles of Las Vegas.

According to Metro Police, the wreck occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. at Spanish Ridge Avenue and Durango Drive. Police say Aviles was driving a 1998 Pontiac Firebird when he lost control, drove into a desert area, hit a wall and struck a 1988 Honda CRX, which was driven by another 19 year old.

Police say Aviles was dead when they arrived. The driver of the Honda left the scene of the wreck. Police have not released suspect information at this time.

For months, business owners along the stretch of road where the cars crashed suspected illegal street racers had used the area to race. Monday morning their suspicions were proved correct.

Nearly every Monday morning, after a quiet weekend, the director for the nonprofit Candlelighters' finds trash covering the parking lot.

Coroner identifies man shot and killed in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Coroner's Office said 42-year-old Monty Culverson was the person shot and killed on Hassell Avenue late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

The coroner's office said Culverson died from a gun shot wound to the chest.

Metro Police said at 11:55 p.m. patrol officers were sent out to the 1300 block of Hassell Avenue to investigate reports of possible shots fired. However, after a search of the area, Metro said its officers didn't find a victim or any sign of a crime scene.

But at 1:03 a.m., officers received information once again about a shooting in the area of the 1300 block of Hassell Avenue.

When officers arrived to the scene this time, they said they found Culverson in the back of the home, dead on the ground.

Police said there weren't any suspects found at the scene and no one has been arrested.  This is the 108th homicide investigated by Metro Police.

Elderly man hit by car at Spring Mtn, Wynn

LAS VEGAS -- An 85-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit by a car while crossing the street near Spring Mountain and Wynn roads, Metro Police said.

According to police, the crash happened just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. The victim was walking eastbound in a crosswalk when he was hit by a car that was turning on a yellow flashing light. The driver told police the sun was in his eyes and he did not see the victim. 

The victim was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition with bleeding in his brain.  

All lanes in the area are closed for the investigation. Metro's Fatal Detail has been called out to the scene.

 

 

Driving You Crazy: Leaking pipes near Peace and Tenaya

LAS VEGAS - Elizabeth says two pipes near a housing development at Peace Way and Tenaya Way leak water day and night.

Traffic8 first addressed water waste in Spring Valley neighborhoods in September.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District tells 8 News NOW they are aware of this particular leak. The water district marked the area with a yellow flag, which warns owners or landscapers of a waste issue that is under investigation.

Water crews posted the flag September 25 and informed residents of the situation. The water district made some follow-up visits – most recently on October 23. The Las Vegas Valley Water District issued two citations and plan to follow up on November 6.
