Star Trek Fans Hold Zombie Flash Mob at Convention

The Star Trek Convention has started at the Rio Hotel and Casino. Some fans of the TV series and movies performed the dance routine from “Thriller” while wearing Star Trek uniforms.

The convention goes through Sunday with several special events planned for fans, including autograph sessions, performances by Star Trek actors and a world record attempt for the most people in Star Trek costume in one place.

All things Star Trek are returning to the Rio Suites Hotel and Casino for the Official Star Trek Convention.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend this year’s convention, which will run August 9 through 11. Star Trek celebrities from every incarnation of the franchise are expected to appear including four of the captains: William Shatner, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula.

Fans will have a chance to not only see the stars on stage but to meet them personally at parties and autograph sessions. Other highlights include the 25th anniversary reunion of the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Avery Brooks in a concert performance, a world record attempt for the most people in Star Trek costumes at one place, a costume contest and craft workshops for kids.

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada has a multitude of programming available this summer for girls 5 to 17 years old. From day camps to single day programs, girls can discover fun and friendships to last a lifetime.

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is offering special anniversary pricing on Camp Foxtail registration as a celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouting. Save $100 on resident summer camp with session prices ranging from $50 to $295.

Camp Foxtail is located in the cool in the cool Spring Mountain Range, just 45 minutes from Las Vegas.

Summer sessions run through August 17 and a 10-day pre-registration is required.  Registration is available at girlscoutsnv.org.

Campaign Aims to Provide Water for Homeless

 

Donations of water and money are being sought to help hydrate the homeless through the brutal southern Nevada summer heat.

HELP of Southern Nevada’s “HELP2O” campaign seeks to help protect homeless residents by donating water and spare change at Whole Foods Market now through August. Those looking to donate bottled water can do so by visiting Whole Foods’ Tenaya (7250 W. Lake Mead Blvd.) and Town Square (6689 Las Vegas Blvd.) locations. 

Bottled water donations can be purchased in-store and donated, or purchased elsewhere and dropped off at Whole Foods. The water will be collected on a regular basis and distributed throughout the area.

Donate a Suit, Swim for Free Friday Night

 

You can swim for free Friday night at local pools in exchange for a small clothing donation.

Hollywood and Desert Breeze outdoor pools are hosting the “Make a Splash” swimsuit drive from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. A family of four can swim for free at either facility in exchange for donating a new children’s swimsuit at the door. Youth swimsuits for boys and girls in all sizes are needed, and will be distributed to children in need whose families can’t afford swimsuits. Any admission collected during the event in lieu of a donated suit also will be used to purchase new swimsuits.
