Dog Orientation Classes Now Offered

Dog lovers will get a chance to get free help training their pooches at several dog training workshops around the valley. Three different dog parks are participating.Desert Breeze will hold its "Come and Let's Chat: How to Communicate with Your Pet" day on June 18th from 1 to 2 in the afternoon. The training will be offered by Vegas Valley Obedience club.

Commission Chair Susan Brager and Graffiti Free Nevada Clean UP SW Las Vegas!

March has been declared "Graffiti Free Nevada" month, and in honor of this Commission Chair Susan Brager and a group of volunteers will be spending their Saturday morning cleaning up multiple sites throughout the southwest part of the valley. The county will be providing all the supplies, volunteers providing the labor. If you see them out working tomorrow (they will be out until noon) say hi!

Residents are encouraged to call the Southern Nevada Graffiti Hotline at (702) 455-4509 to report graffiti.

Liberty Tax Service offers Free Tax Prep for Teachers and School Employees through March 6th!

Liberty Tax Services are hosting "Educator Appreciation Days", now through March 6th, as a way to support all of those who help educate our children. All area teachers, school employees, and school bus drivers are being offered free tax preparation at Liberty if they are a new customer!

"Employees involved in educating our children deserve a tax break," said Randall Brody of the Liberty Tax Service on Maryland Parkway. "We have 'Appreciation Days' to show our respect for the teaching profession and those employed by the schools."

Mary Hinson named 2011 Honorary New Balance Survivor!

Mary Hinson, of Boulder City, NV has been named the 2011 Honorary New Balance Survivor by the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen! She will be the Honorary Team New Balance member at this year's Race for the Cure, which will be held on May 7th in downtown Las Vegas. Team New Balance is made up of men and women who have beaten cancer and gone on to share their stories with the world.

“I’d like to think I was nominated to be the 2011 New Balance Survivor for my commitment to raising funds and awareness that early detection saves lives,” said Hinson. “I’m honored to have been nominated and dedicate it to my family, friends, fellow survivors and health care professionals who help me be the best survivor that I can be. I also want to personally thank Susan G. Komen Southern Nevada for reaching out to me in my time of need.”

"Feed a Pig, Help a Senior" Fundraiser March 2nd at Buzz BBQ

Tomorrow, Buzz BBQ will be the site of the "Feed a Pig, Help a Senior" fundraiser, for the benefit of the Helping Hand of Vegas Valley Group. Helping Hands provides an invaluable service to the Vegas Valley community, offering free transportation and respite care vouchers to seniors and running a food pantry. With "Feed a Pig", community groups are sponsoring Piggy Banks which will be racing until May 31st, with all of the Piggies funds to go towards Helping Hands.

During "Feed a Pig, Help a Senior", people are encouraged to bring along their piggy banks, or adopt one of the piggy banks in the race seen at http://www.piggy4seniors.org/. All attendees who donate to one of the racing piggy banks will be given 20% off of all you can eat food and drink at Buzz!

"Feed a Pig, Help a Senior" takes place from 3pm to 7pm on Wednesday, March 2nd at Buzz BBQ, 9640 West Tropicana Avenue, Las Vegas NV, 89147.

UNLV “Spread the Word to End the Word”  on Wednesday March 2nd

This Wednesday, UNLV's chapter of Best Buddies and students from the PACE Program at S.E.C.T.A. will gather in the Student Union Courtyard to "Spread the Word". The goal of the groups is to convince members of the UNLV community to stop using the "R" words in a derogatory way, getting 1,000 plus signatures on a banner. They group will also be selling lunches as a fundraiser for their chapter.

The "R" word the groups are focusing on is retarded. Many people casually toss it about in a derogatory manner- 92% of the youth in this country have heard people use the term in such a way. However, this usage of the term is insulting and hurtful to people with intellectual disabilities. So drop by the Best Buddies on Wednesday if you agree and sign!

3rd Annual WCC Kidz Day to be Held March 7th

The West Coast Conference and Zappos.com will be hosting their third annual Kidz Day on March 7th at the Orleans Arena! At the 2011 Kidz Day, 1,000 kids from the After-School All-Stars Las Vegas program will come down to the Arena for a day of fun activities and prizes, including a pair of free shoes. The day concludes with the West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Game, which all 1,000 Kidz Day participants are able to attend! 

“Every year has been an opportunity for us to make this experience a bigger and better one for the After-School All-Stars," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "Our WCC staff and Zappos.com have really teamed up to make this event a true celebration of our commitment to working together and giving back to the Las Vegas community."
