Local Students Raise Money for Bombing Victims

A group of students at one Las Vegas elementary school did what they could to help the people impacted by the bombing in Boston.

Students at Ries Elementary School held a fundraiser Friday for the victims of Monday's deadly bombing.

Students could pay for the privilege of wearing hats to school. They were able to raise more than $300.

A group of local second-graders are working together to raise money for animal adoptions in the sweetest of ways.

From noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the students from the Meadows School will hold a fundraising bake sale for the Nevada SPCA. They will be joined by rescued dogs from the shelter.

Last year, the students raised more than $7,000, primarily through the sale of items costing under $1, Nevada SPCA officials said.

Meadows School is located at 8601 Scholar Lane.

St. Rose Receives Breast Cancer Education Grant

 

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals will receive another $25,000 grant to help improve awareness of early detection of breast cancer.

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program gave the funds to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals’ R.E.D. (Responsible Early Detection) Rose Program for education about early detection through annual mammograms. It’s the third year the program has received funding from the Avon Foundation for Women.

The R.E.D. Rose Program refers women and men under 49 who lack adequate health care coverage or the means to pay, to the following services: free clinical breast exams, mammograms, ultrasounds, surgical consultations and biopsies. The program also provides information and referrals as well as financial assistance to those undergoing treatment.

Police Face Firefighters in Charity Hockey Game

 

Police will face-off against firefighters this weekend in the annual Guns N' Hoses benefit game.

Members of the Metro Police department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue will play hockey to raise money for Opportunity Village.

The game is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, 4500 West Tropicana Avenue.

Tickets are just $10 per person.

The Las Vegas Wranglers will play the Alaska Aces following the charity game at 7 p.m.

There will be a broom battle between the Henderson Police Department and the Clark County Fire Department during intermission.

Wrangles Host Fundraising Night for Children's Hospital of Nevada

 

This month people can enjoy a hockey game and support a local children's hospital.

The Las Vegas Wranglers are hosting Children's Hospital of Nevada Night January 19. The hospital will get 25 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales that night and from an auction of players' jerseys also set for that night.

The Wranglers will be playing the Colorado Eagles. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the Orleans Arena.

Red Kettle Campaign Kicks Off Saturday

 

It is one of the most iconic sights and sounds of the holiday season, the red kettles and bell ringers for the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army kicks off its Annual Red Kettle Campaign Saturday at the park at Town Square.

The kickoff will start at 8 a.m. with a Walk-a-Thon. Participants will get friends and family to make a donation based on the number of laps they make around the central square. All the proceeds will be donated to the Red Kettle Campaign totals.

The Salvation Army will also be collecting toys for the Christmas Angel program.
