County Fire Needs More Volunteers
LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Fire Department encompasses 8,000 square miles of territory. In an event of major fire, like the wildfire in Moapa earlier this month, volunteers are crucial in responding to emergency calls in rural areas. But Clark County's fire chief says they could use more of those volunteers.
The fire in Moapa over ran several homes and charred acres of land. It took the help of volunteer firefighters from Logandale and Overton to put it out. But several fire departments that have seen a decline in volunteer firefighters and have fire stations where more than half of the volunteer firefighters were over 50-years-old.
Dozens of volunteer fire crews were responsible for suppressing this blaze in Moapa. But Clark County Assistant Fire Chief Mike Johnson says they need more volunteers to prevent wildfires from spreading further.
