Police union defends officer terminated for hesitating on 1 October

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Metro Police confirm the termination of an officer seen hesitating during the 1 October shooting was news 8 News Now first told viewers about on Tuesday night. But on Wednesday, the police union spoke up to defend Officer Cordell Hendrex’s actions.

“At the time when Officer Hendrex was trained, they were trained that the only way you attack a bad guy like that would be through a 4-man element, nothing less,” said Steve Grammas, Las Vegas Police Protective Association.

According to the department, Hendrex was fired in March because of his performance of duties that night.

Las Vegas native Bryce Harper made big news when he signed a 13-year, $330-million-dollar contract with the Philadelphia Phillies during the offseason.

The contract set a short-lived record for North American sports at the time. Contracts in all professional sports leagues are reaching record numbers for free agents in the open market when it comes to guaranteed money.

1 injured in shooting near Cheyenne and Rampart

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Metro Police investigated a shooting Wednesday afternoon near W. Cheyenne Avenue and N. Rampart Boulevard. It happened around 3:00 p.m. at 3151 Soaring Gulls Dr.

When officers arrived at the scene they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UMC Trauma to be treated for his injuries.

Volunteers warned about recent robberies at fireworks stands

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Law enforcement is urging operators of fireworks stands to stay vigilant following some recent robberies. Police have released a sketch of one of the suspects and images of some vehicles.

Metro Police are searching for two armed suspects who have been robbing charity stands in the valley.

The volunteers, who are raising money for church charities, were robbed at gunpoint, police said.

There are surveillance cameras in the area which recorded everything and police are looking at the videos to try and track down the thieves.

Police released images of the cars believed to have been used in the string of armed robberies that are targeting charity firework stands. In each crime, police say a car pulls directly to the booth and one to two men then demand cash at gunpoint... Read More

Report: Security guard shot man, returned to his rounds

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A former security guard accused of shooting to death a man at a shopping center told police the man walked toward him aggressively and that’s why he shot him.

According to the arrest report, Brian Love, 26, didn’t explain to police why he never reported the shooting and continued with his rounds.

Love, who worked for SOS Security, is accused of shooting 27-year-old Max Garcia on Saturday, June 29 around 12:45 a.m. Because the shooting wasn’t reported, Garcia’s body was not discovered until around 8 a.m.

The arrest report says surveillance video shows Love approaching Garcia, who was sleeping on the sidewalk in front of a business, and talking to him. Love then walks back toward his vehicle and fires one gunshot into the air. Garcia gets up and begins walking toward Love and Love opens fire, shooting Garcia as many as 15 times... Read More

Thousands of barrels of bourbon burn in Kentucky

WOODFORD COUNTY, Ky. — Firefighters in Kentucky are trying to extinguish a burning Jim Beam warehouse filled with about 45,000 barrels of bourbon.

Woodford County Emergency Management Director Drew Chandler tells WKYT-TV that two barrel warehouses caught fire late Tuesday.

Crews were able to put one out, but the other kept burning for hours.

Chandler says it may have been caused by lightning.

A nearby road has been shut down as crews fight the blaze. Chandler estimates firefighters will be working at the scene late into Wednesday night... Read More
