Police: Grow House Had False Door Hiding Operation

LAS VEGAS – The man who was arrested Monday with more than 50 marijuana plants in his house told police his state medical marijuana card had expired, according to the arrest report.

Michael Herda, 23, of Las Vegas, was arrested after police were told that a strong smell of marijuana was coming from the house, located in the 8300 block of Fox Brook Avenue in the southwest valley.

After obtaining a search warrant, police discovered a large grow operation in the house. The plants were found growing in several rooms that had been converted from what appeared to be one or two bedrooms with a false door hiding them, according to the arrest report.

LAS VEGAS -- The 23-year-old grandson of a well-known Las Vegas businessman is facing charges of possessing marijuana.

Michael Herda was arrested Monday night when Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department SWAT officers served a search warrant at a home on Fox Brook Avenue in southwest Las Vegas.

According to Metro Police, about 50 plants were removed from the home and have an estimated street value of $150,000.

Herda is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to sell.

Herda is the grandson of murdered businessman John Herda who ran a discount television and appliance store.


Nonprofit Holding 'Clean Out Your Closet' Event


A nonprofit dedicated to helping people battling cancer is holding a clothing drive Saturday.

Angels of Las Vegas want people to clean out their closets and donate gently used items to the charity. Clothing will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at three drop-off points around southern Nevada:

  • Angels of Las Vegas Office - 6655 W. Sahara Avenue, Suite B200
  • Hollywood Hair & Beauty Supply - 4850 W. Flamingo Road, Suite 45
  • All Out Collision Center - 545 W. Sunset Road, Henderson

The event is being sponsored by the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. Money raised through the clothing drive will help pay for the services Angels of Las Vegas offer, including cancer support groups, educational workshops and healthy lifestyle programs.

Trekkies are in town this week for the annual Star Trek convention at the Rio Suites hotel, which celebrates a franchise that contributed 726 television episodes and 11 feature films to American culture.

KLAS-TV Channel 8 sent Multimedia Editor Mike Cao to the convention to bring back photos of Star Trek stars and costumed pretenders, a risky assignment considering one may have to confront enemy Klingons and Romulans. With that in mind here is a tribute to eight actors and actresses who appeared on the original TV show during its inaugural season in 1966 and 1967.

Star Trek Fans Hold Zombie Flash Mob at Convention

The Star Trek Convention has started at the Rio Hotel and Casino. Some fans of the TV series and movies performed the dance routine from “Thriller” while wearing Star Trek uniforms.

The convention goes through Sunday with several special events planned for fans, including autograph sessions, performances by Star Trek actors and a world record attempt for the most people in Star Trek costume in one place.
